Joinery is a key element of any woodworking project, blending art with engineering. Strong joints can enhance the craftsmanship and extend the longevity of any wood furniture, from functional desks to ornate cabinets.

Kitchen Fitters Edinburgh / Joiner in Glasgow / Joiners Leeds / Sheffield Joiners

While your joinery skills may be restricted to basic DIY odd jobs around the house, and do not compare to professional joiners or carpenters, equipping yourself with a proper toolkit should help you to effectively accomplish joinery and carpentry projects at home– whether it is creating simple shelves or cutting out complex wardrobe boxes. You do not need to clutter up with the latest tools available on the market, rather ensure that you have the basic tools to successfully tackle the odd joinery and carpentry job.

Portable workbench

A portable workbench is a versatile piece of joinery equipment that is useful in practically every woodworking project. Most workbenches are usually equipped with adjustable jaws or clamps that help secure the wood in place while you saw, drill or plane it. Workbenches are generally lightweight and foldable, offering a space-saving storage option.

Saws to suit the task

A wide variety of saws are used for different joinery and carpentry applications. Though several power tools have been introduced to cut wood, nothing replaces the sheer simplicity, control and accuracy of manual saws. The panel saw and the tenon saw are two saws that should form part of your basic toolkit. While the panel saw is used to cut standard wood to length, the tenon saw has stiff, fine teeth and is used to cut joints and thin sheets of wood such as plywood.

Hand plane

Once the wood is cut, you can apply sandpaper to give the wood a smooth finish, or give your joinery a professional feel by using a hand plane to shave off excess layers of wood, or thin out wood that is too thick. The hand plane comprises of an adjustable sharp blade located in the centre of the hand plane. It enables you to create perfectly flat edges flat on two pieces of wood prior to joining them together to form a single piece.

Bevel edge Chisels

Bevel edge chisels are very handy tools in creating joints for timber framing. Owing to their bevelled edge blades, these chisels are especially helpful when working in tight corners. While chisels are available in different sizes and sold as sets, most of your DIY joinery needs can be met with a 1/4-chisel and a 1/2-inch chisel. You must ensure that your chisel stays sharp to function effectively. Regularly maintain it by using a sharpening oilstone and a honing guide to hold the chisel at an appropriate angle while sharpening.

Drills and bits

Make sure that a drill forms part of your toolkit arsenal, and that you have wood drill bits of varying sizes. It is essential to use drill bits of the appropriate diameter, as smaller joinery holes must be drilled with twist drill bits, medium and deep ones with auger bits and large ones with spade bits. You can also use hole saw bits or a jigsaw to drill extremely large holes, in order to provide an outlet for a drainpipe behind a kitchen cabinet; or a countersink bit to drill shallow depressions for countersunk screws.

Having quality locks on your windows and doors can drastically lower your insurance premiums as well as ensuring that your insurance is valid and that your possessions and family are kept safe. You can contact your local locksmith for advice on the different types of locks available for the windows and doors in your home; however we will briefly explain the different locks in this article so that you have a basic understanding before contacting your lock replacement experts.

Fiver lever mortice deadlocks are among the safest kinds of locks available for the main doors in your property. By getting a locksmith to install a lock of this type that adheres to British standards, your insurer will more than likely reduce your insurance premium for having a more secure property and having adequate security. These are the types of locks which have the traditional old-style key holes, which are very different to the standard Yale locks.

A multi-point locking system is the kind of lock generally found on PVC doors, generally on back doors, patio doors and conservatory doors. These have a small slit type lock which is key operated, and have a handle above them. It is made up of a rim locking systems that bolts the door into the frame, and so generally this is quite a safe option, although additional bolts won’t hurt and can be arranged by speaking to your locksmiths.

Rim latch automatic locks, like the Yale lock, are very common on wooden doors but are actually one of the easiest types of locks to break through. Some of these lock types can be opened simply by slipping a thin object in behind the lock, and this of course isn’t favoured by insurers. If you do have this type of lock, you can either have additional locks fitted into the door by your locksmith or get a lock replacement company to change the locks to a more modern and secure type of lock. This may mean replacing the door, but it is better to be safe than sorry!

It is very important that you know exactly what kind of locks you have, as by giving your insurance company incorrect details about your locks could mean that you end up paying more on insurance premiums that you need to. If you’re not sure, contact your local locksmithing experts and ask them to come out and check for you. They should also be able to give you advice on the security of the locks ain your home including those on doors and windows.

If you have given incorrect lock details to your insurance company and your home is burgled, it could mean that they refuse a claim and that you won’t get a payout for any claims made, so it is vital that you give the correct information, and that you note down information relating to your locks if you have your locks changed due to burglary or lost keys.

One of the most prominent puzzles of our generation – renewable energy. It’s a bright idea to conserve our precious planet, and extensive research has been carried out to determine which method is the most effective and viable. Solar panels have become a much more common sight in recent years, with individuals installing them on their rooftops and large companies trying to become more ‘green’. However, as with everything, there are arguments for and against solar panels which are still rumbling on today despite their growing popularity.

The obvious point is that solar energy is a renewable source. The sun rises and falls every day, and to have found a way of using those rays of goodness is frankly an amazing scientific achievement. It makes for a cleaner environment, no need for adding dirt and chemicals into the atmosphere in order to light up our streets and houses – we can use nature’s own light source to do just that! For the individual member of the public, there is liberation from big power companies by investing in solar panels for the home and producing their own energy supply.

All sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? On paper, it does, but some think the quality and quantity of energy produced should be questioned, especially since the cost of installing and maintaining the solar panels is so high. I believe however, that over the years the price will drop as popularity grows, and they become a more common amenity. It has been the same with other household goods, such as the humble flat screen TV, as a completely diverse comparison! There are also those who point out the problem of cloudy weather equalling no energy produced. The solar panel providers have overcome this problem already, with battery packs which store up as much energy as they can gather whilst the sun is shining, Power is therefore still available through the night, and of course cloudy periods! Naturally, the cost for purchasing this battery pack then comes into question.

When other renewable energy sources such as wind turbines are considered, the same ‘for and against’ style arguments come into play. What a fantastic use of another natural force, the ‘modern windmill’ – a very different use to those windmills of bygone days! However many argue that they are noisy and aesthetically displeasing, and of course don’t work when there is a lack of wind!

Overall, it is sensible to look at the pros and cons of such an invention, but perhaps the time has come to embrace this as the way for the future, and look at improving and promoting it rather than looking for fault. Surely the environment is more important in the grand scheme of things than aesthetics and cost? There are irreplaceable treasures at stake – the atmosphere in which we live and breathe, wildlife, and our own future generations; all supported by the natural balance of the Earth. Perhaps a combination of solar and wind energy could be the answer, to increase the chance of having at least one source. A solar panel and mini turbine on each roof could look smart, and would be a smart option for planet Earth.

When designing a house, designers will look back in time for influences far more frequently than looking at what the contemporary has to offer. Some believe that no idea is original which partly explains the nostalgia phenomenon that permeates modern day culture, especially interior design.

Bathroom Fitter Birmingham / Plumbers Manchester / Plumber Liverpool

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house and you can’t live without one so it makes sense to take some time over it. The Victorian aesthetic has become increasingly popular in recent times in the field of interior design and especially prevalent in the design of the bathroom with free-standing claw footed bathtubs, black and white chequered tiling, toilets with high rise cisterns, ornate sinks with beautiful taps, and dark wooden panelling popular features of today’s washrooms.

Plumber in Manchester / Birmingham Plumbers

Not only has the Victorian era found its way into the house aesthetically, it also has practically. The Victorian Age was a time industrial and technological progress however perhaps not as widely discussed with reverence, the Victorian era was a time for very important developments in plumbing that had enormous positive effects on sanitation. The first public toilets were exhibited at The Crystal Palace.

Then the wash out design emptying into a S-trap was invented, the first flush toilets were found in Norway but most believed to be imported from England, the floating valve system was replaced and the new system for emptying the tank that helped stop leaks was popularised and used in the first modern pedestal toilet, similar to what we use today and was first demonstrated in Chelsea, the same year that the first all in one ceramic toilet was built that we are all familiar with today. The Victorian age gave the world the perfected flushing toilet and plumbers have been working with it ever since.

The free standing claw footed dark wood panelled bath tub immediately springs to mind when thinking of the Victorian aesthetic in the design and plumbing of Victorian bathrooms. Its elegant design made it a luxury item in the 19th Century and still is a sign of luxury, though modern technology has made it far more affordable today which is one of the reasons why the Victorian aesthetic is so popular. Originally made out of cast-iron that was incredibly heavy and would also get very hot this was changed to porcelain that also upped the price that made it a luxury item that spoke to one’s status. As plumbing developed, the claw footed bathtub fell out of favour to make way for the modern ‘against the wall’ bathtub that at the time was more practical. A modern day resurgence meant reproduction continued retaining the beauty of its Victorian design and utilising the development in modern day plumbing so the claw footed bathtub is cheaper and easier to move, install and maintain.

The Victorian bathroom takes us back to the Victorian age, but fortunately for us this time around there’ll be central heating.

Carpet cleaning isn’t always the first thing people think about when choosing a new carpet or rug. Colour, pattern, texture and durability tend to be the primary considerations. But without an understanding of the type of carpet cleaning your chosen carpet needs, you may well find it looking faded, jaded and old long before its time.

Carpet Cleaners Sheffield / Cleaner Edinburgh / Glasgow Cleaner / Cleaners Birmingham / Cleaner Manchester

Carpets can be divided into two main groups: those made from natural fibres and those made from synthetic fibres. Natural isn’t always best when it comes to carpet cleaning. You will need to weigh up the pros and cons of natural and synthetic fibres for your own individual situation.

Cleaner in Liverpool / Manchester Cleaner / Cleaner Birmingham / Edinburgh Cleaners / Cleaners Leicester

Wool is the classic natural fibre. Wool is a popular choice because it combines beauty with durability. You can keep a wool carpet looking good simply by vacuuming regularly. This removes dirt particles and abrasive grit, preventing damage to the pile. Blot spillages carefully with white kitchen roll or an absorbent cloth. Then use a stain remover approved by the Woolsafe organisation. Hire a carpet cleaning company accredited by Woolsafe to have your wool carpet cleaned on a regular basis, as they will use specialist equipment and products.

Silk rugs are becoming fashionable. As silk is not colour-fast, make sure that any spillages are blotted quickly. Water makes silk fibres weak and can also discolour the fabric. Silk fibres are delicate and should only be cleaned by a specialist carpet cleaning company.

Other natural fibres are also gaining popularity as floor coverings. Jute is a hardwearing vegetable fibre. Like silk, jute fibres become weakened when wet. Scrape away any hard particles of dirt or grit before vacuuming to prevent damage. Hire a carpet cleaning professional to remove stains and freshen up your jute carpet or rug.

Seagrass is also popular. Reasonably priced and eco-friendly, seagrass is the naturally attractive choice. Find a carpet cleaning company that specialises in dry cleaning seagrass to keep your carpets and rugs looking great.

Moving on to synthetic fibres, nylon has the advantage of being stain-resistant as well as durable. It is recommended for areas with a heavy volume of footfall, which is why nylon carpets are frequently seen in commercial settings. Sometimes, nylon is added to wool. Nylon fibres are not damaged by exposure to a little moisture. Wet methods of carpet cleaning, like hot water extraction or steam cleaning, can produce excellent results.

Polypropylene is even more stain-resistant than nylon. Polypropylene carpets are actually guaranteed against staining and the surface can even be cleaned with bleach. However, polypropylene can have a tendency to look dull when grimy. Regular carpet cleaning will counteract this effect.

Polyester is a good option if the budget is tight. It is soft, making it ideal for bedrooms and areas with low footfall. Blot up spillages, taking care not to rub the pile. Polyester also has stain-resistant qualities, but does not last as long as other materials. Carpet cleaning using hot water extraction or steam cleaning can extend the life of polyester carpets.

For many householders considering roofing repairs, alterations or repairs – the issue of planning permission looms large. In a nutshell, is it required?

Roofers Derby / Roof Repairs Birmingham / Roofers Manchester

In basic terms, the rules are clear and concise from the UK Government’s online planning and building regulations website, the Planning Portal:

Birmingham Roofer / Manchester Roofers

You do not normally need to apply for planning permission to re-roof your house or to insert roof lights or skylights.

Simple enough – but there are some caveats and exceptions. Many of these apply to building regulations approval.

Protected Species

Work on some roofs and lofts may affect bats. A licence may be required.

Building Regulations (Applicable to both work an existing roof and constructing a new roof)

Existing Roof

If you are repairing/recovering less than 25% of the area of a flat or pitch roof a building regulations application would not usually be necessary. Approval would be required under the following circumstances:

Carrying out structural alterations.

Performance of new covering would differ significantly to the existing covering in the event of a fire.

If you are replacing/repairing more than 25% of the roof area, the roof thermal insulation would normally require improvement.

Re- Roofing

Many re-roofing projects would require Building Regulations approval.

Flat Roof – A prime concern is heat loss/efficiency, so it may be necessary to upgrade the insulation if it is a roof with ‘integral insulation’.

Pitch Roof – If the existing roof covering is to be replaced with a different material, for example from slate to tile, then Building Regulations approval is likely to be required. This is primarily to ensure the new roof will provide acceptable structural stability (the new materials used may be stronger/lighter than those they replace, for example). It is possible the roof structure will need strengthening to accommodate the new materials.

Fire safety and energy efficiency considerations are also likely to apply. A roof is deemed a ‘thermal element’ in terms of heat loss, so re-roofing would include provision for improving the insulation properties.

Construction of a New Roof (as distinct from re-roofing – e.g. for an extension)

For a new roof, Building Regulations compliance will require the new roof to:

Resist weather

Resist the spread of fire from one property to another

Be able to support loads

Offer good insulation properties

Possess adequate drainage

Be well ventilated (in some cases)

Ventilation - Not required where insulation is placed above joist and rafters in a ‘warm roofing’ system. Otherwise, ventilation is required – known as a ‘cold roofing’ system.

Summary

If you are using a roofing contractor as opposed to doing your own roofing work, then they should be reasonably expected to appraise you of planning/Building Regulation considerations. Do not assume this, though – make sure you personally check with your local authority to ensure you are adhering to any known regulations.

Please be aware the above article is not a definitive source of legal information.

Hiring a plumber needn’t be an ordeal. If your pipe bursts or your toilet blocks it can be a huge inconvenience and it is essential that the problem be fixed by someone who not only knows what they are doing, but also someone you can trust. Plumbers may seem ten a penny, but it really is worth finding the best one for the job – that way you can relax and you know your home is in safe hands rather than worrying about hiring a rogue trader.

Plumbers Liverpool | Plumbers in Liverpool | Plumbers Edinburgh

The best thing to do is plan in advance – if an emergency plumbing situation arises you will feel better calling a plumber you have used before, or at least one you have done your homework on, rather than panicking and hiring someone who is unable to do the job to the high standards you require.

Plumbing Nottingham | Plumbers Bristol | Plumbers Glasgow

The first thing to do is ask friends, workmates and family members in your local area for recommendations of professionals they have previously hired. Independent plumbers survive on reputation and if they have done a good job in the past for someone you know, you will feel far more secure hiring them to work in your home. However, when a plumbing emergency strikes or your acquaintances do not have any suggestions, it is best to put a little bit of time into sourcing the right plumber for the job. Searching online is usually the most efficient way of finding any tradesman nowadays, so the first place to go would be Google – a place where you’ve every chance of finding a recommended and trusted tradesmen. You can narrow the search to your local area and see what rating each plumber has been given by searching on some review or recommendation sites.

However, it is a good idea to dig a little deeper when trying to decide who to hire to attend to your plumbing needs. Does the trader have their own website? If so, see if they have photos of previous work or any recommendations on the website, as well as any estimates for what they charge. Emergency call-out charges can be pretty steep so it is always helpful to be prepared.

Whether you’re looking for a plumber who does emergency and basic plumbing work or one who can do bigger projects, there are some other things to consider. Some plumbers can remodel your bathroom or kitchen and as these are big tasks to undertake, it is best to make sure you’re thorough. Ask if they are insured and, if you feel it necessary, ask for references too. It is always a good idea to make sure you know where you stand regarding overtime charges and any follow up work that they may offer. Some plumbers will gladly come out and do some after care on big jobs (such as installation of a new bathroom) free of charge if required. Of course, the aim here is not to give them the third degree, but simply get a feel for the trader or company and find out how they have performed in the past.

As you can see – a little preparation can go a long way when it comes to hiring a plumber. Do some research in the right places, and ask the right questions, and when the time comes when you really need someone you’ll be able to call up a plumber you can trust.

The quality of bricks and mortar is vital for laying down foundations; similarly the quality of a roof to uphold a structure is just as important. There are a wide variety of flat roofing materials to choose from which are subdivided to suit the type of flat roofing. Flat roofing generally falls under three categories:

Built Up Flat Roofs (BUR)

The roof is built up using several layers of saturated –tar paper, liquid tar or liquid asphalt or modified Bitumen acting as a roof membrane. Layers and layers of the material are laid down in a criss cross pattern until a satisfactory secure numbers of layers have been reached. As an added measure a layer of gravel is placed on top to help further protect it from the suns unrelenting rays.

Single Ply Roofing

This is the most commonly used type of roofing where just a single layer is laid down. This type of roofing is much thinner and lighter using materials that have both waterproof and weather resilient properties.

Single Ply Roofing comes in different forms where some are made from EPDM Rubber. The Rubber roofs are usually black, unenforced and use adhesives to secure the seams and be watertight.

PVC (Poly vinyl chloride) and TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) are also used as flat roofing materials. They are white and reinforced with hot air welded seals. They require specialist equipment to install and weld the seams. They both work in similar fashions except TPO is relatively newer and a cheaper alternative to PVC.

Liquid applied Roofing

This particular flat roofing system uses two methods of applying a liquefied protective coating on the roof to increase its durability. The two methods employed are Spray foam coating (SPF)and Roofing coating

Spray foam coating is where primary and secondary insulation is sprayed directly onto the roof and then reinforced with a coating of acrylic or urethane. This coating is then covered by a layer of crushed sand or stone for added protection.

The coating is essential for long term performance and to prevent UV rays from the destroying the insulating foam. Ideally SPF roofs should be recoated every ten years to maintain its performance and leak free reputation. However the leak free notion isn’t entirely free from error as birds have a tendency to eat away at the insulation causing perforation and leaks. These can be easily repaired and the advantage of SPF roofing is the tight seal created and seamless insulation.

Roof coating

This has been primarily designed to coat existing roofs and extend their performance by up to 15 years. They act as an additional waterproof layer although not all tend to.

Roof coatings are most effective when used on smooth surface roofs such as the older EPDM roofs, low sloped metal ones or the modified bitumen roofs. The coating isn’t well suited for tar and gravelly roofs as the debris and dirt that collects makes the surface uneven. It is important to have a smooth surface for full even coverage.

The best roofing material is one that is long lasting, weather durable and minimal maintenance is required. A proven track record is important to consider, and although the material may be more expensive, in the long run the quality will withstand against the elements and prove to be money well spent.

Fibreglass roofing, also known among roofers as GRP roofing (glass fibre reinforced plastic) is the perfect type of roofing to use for flat roofs. This is due to a series of factors, including its remarkable strength (less so than carbon fibre, but carbon fibre is also a lot more brittle) the fact that it’s lightweight and easy to apply and finally its viability. Fibreglass is not only used for roofing, but also a host of other items from boats to hot-tubs. It is created from large furnaces that in some way weld the plastic and the glass together; to make the plastic reinforced glass known as GRP.

Roofers Edinburgh | Roofers Manchester | Roofers Birmingham | Flat Roofing Birmingham | Roofing Manchester

Due to its lightweight properties, Fibre-glass provides the opportunity for a much faster roof installation because it lowers weight manual handling issues. After all, no one wants to carry a huge weight up to a semi-built roof and back to the van at the end of the day! GRP Roofing can also withstand heavy traffic, so for those flat roof owners who like the idea of a party high up there’s absolutely no worry about the roof caving in from over-drunken dancing. The greatest thing about GRP roofing is it’s completely and utterly environmentally friendly, which has never been more important in this day and age where fears of climate is on the rise.

First of all, before any fibreglass is added to the mix, a deck has to be laid down, this is boarding usually used with 18mm tongue and OSB3 boards with grooves in them designed to minimise expansion and contraction. To make sure there are absolutely no points in which water can enter, boards are staggered. They’re then fixed to the joists with run-of-the-mill nails guns or alternatively they can be screwed down with a screw gun.

Once edge trimmed and bandaged with a special catalyst that hardens the fibre-glass resin that helps the edge trimming, laminating can take place. Firstly, using a simple roller, the resin is rolled out just before the GRP resins and bandaging have cured. Next pre-cut strand mats are laid out in the appropriate position and rolled out with resin using the roller. Carefully the mats are rolled out metre by metre, to assure accuracy. Laminate has to be rolled right out to the edges, otherwise the GRP won’t work properly, and there’ll be a higher chance of leakage. When the laminate is opaque or a completely white colour, the job has been done correctly. Once the resin has cured to a satisfactory amount, it is sanded down with gritted sandpaper. This is to ensure a perfect, shiny finish. Then a silicone gun is used to seal the edges of adjacent walls.

The finishing resin is applied once it has been mixed with a curing catalyst, the final coat will cure faster than the other coats, and hopefully if the job’s been done right, you’ll now have a perfectly waterproof flat roof ready to have various parties, and there should be no joints or seams. If you really want to have an eccentric roof, you can have flat roofs painted a myriad of colours, just ask your roofer for information. After all, if you had your roof painted red and green, once Christmas swings around you wouldn’t need to worry about lighting.

Fibreglass roofing has become immensely popular amongst roofers, and is an efficient, modern way to make a perfect, waterproof, party-holding roof top.

If you have poor TV signal in your home, there are ways that you can boost the signal so that you get better reception and can watch TV with a clear and crisp picture.

TV Aerials Liverpool / Aerial Fitters Leeds / Aerial Installers Sheffield / Manchester TV Aerials

The best way to boost the signal to your TV is to get in touch with an aerial installations company who can fit a booster aerial or a signal amplifier to your home. This will ensure that the signal is much better than it was previously and means that your freesat or freeview signal will be stronger giving you a much clearer picture on your TV. TV aerial fitters can also rewire your TV aerial with a quality shielded cable so that the picture is less likely to be snowy or distorted.

Birmingham Aerial Fitters / Leicester Aerial Installers / Aerial Fitters in Bristol

There are television aerial signal amplifiers that you can fit yourself, but in order to ensure the best picture quality for your TV, it’s best to contact a TV aerial specialist who can use top of the range equipment for testing and can fit the most suitable amplifiers of aerial boosters in your property. There are also specialist aerials that are more efficient for digital TV, freeview and freesat, so you could speak to your aerial fitters about this.

Of course, the best option would be to switch to satellite or cable TV. Satellite dish installers can help by attaching a quality satellite dish to your home, which can then be used either for freesat or for paid satellite TV services such as Sky TV.

If you have tried various ways of boosting the signal and you are still having trouble, it may be that the aerial cables or aerial sockets in your home are damaged or aren’t working at all. In this case, you will need to talk to an aerial installations company to diagnose the problem and fix it for you. New cables and sockets are inexpensive to fit, so cost shouldn’t be a problem, but to be sure get a few quotes first from local TV aerial specialists. That way there won’t be any surprises.

Something else to check is that you are receiving all channels. After the digital change over, you need to reset your set top box, whether it is satellite, cable TV, freesat or freeview, and this will allow the box to rescan for channels. This should be done every few months anyway to ensure that you are receiving any new channels, as new channels are added all the time.

Another cause for poor TV reception could be a damaged aerial. If your aerial has been in place for many years, it could be damaged or just worn, so you may need a new aerial fitted to your property. All of these options are inexpensive, and could mean that you can be sat watching a crystal clear picture rather than trying to make out what’s going on among the crackly picture!
